Paul and I are having a pity party here in our rental house. It's not even 5 pm, and the Old Fashioneds are flowing. You see, we absolutely fell in love with a 1955 house yesterday and were preparing to make an offer on it. Our realtor called to inform us that the seller had already received three offers and accepted one. Sweet Fancy Moses. We were preparing our offer 36 hours after it hit the market and yet we were beaten to the punch. Is it wrong for me to hope a pipe bursts on the buyers?
So I am finding consolation in the fact that Paul and I have started to meet fellow mid-century enthusiasts in Dallas. The kind of people who might hear about other homes for sale. (Or, perhaps, the kind to whose knees we might need to take a lead pipe should they be seen at an open house.)
Last weekend, we went to Dallas' newest mid-century shop, Mid2Mod. Just a half-block from the Fair Park DART station, this little gem of a shop just opened. Their inventory ranges from classic designs to kitsch, from Scandanavian modern to Texas-made 50s furniture. Items included textiles, ceramics, art, home furnishings, and glass. (Their assortment of Tapio Wiirkala "Ultima Thule" -- the one collectible I inherited from my parents -- featured a desirable and much coveted -- by me -- carafe.) They also sell some contemporary designs with a distinctly retro flavor, like the stylish fiberglass bullet planters that I want on our patio as soon as a chartreuse one arrives in stock.
We found out about the shop from blogger (and frequent Midmod Musings commentor) Dana, who mans the shop on weekends.
The family who owns the shop -- Joe, Jennifer, Holden, and Grayson -- is a charming group of modern enthusiasts. It should be mentioned that Holden was less discriminating than his parents -- a cardboard box place on his head seemed to delight him as much as the Aalvar Alto Paimio Chair next to his high chair. Kids!
So, while Paul and I are no longer planning what kind of flooring to install in our new midcentury home, we do know where to go when we need a Danish teak cocktail cabinet or a rosewood dining table. And that's a little bit of comfort on an otherwise depressing Sunday afternoon.
Bummer. Sorry to hear that this one slipped away, Antay.

We can always hope that the buyer doesn't qualify and that the other two find different houses. More likely, you'll find one you like better. Ever the optimist, I. And thanks for all the kind words about us. We enjoyed visiting with you and hope to see you again soon. Come hang out over a glass of wine...or Manhattans, if you've perfected the recipe.

It doesn't matter whatever kind of party you may have. As long as there is happiness, it will always be fun!

Good to meet you both in Houston at the Modern Market show this past weekend. Please stay in touch. Hang in there. Dallas has some great MCM homes and I'm sure there is one with your name on it.
