Much as I like the way you are able to think of the fifties, Antay, I remember "Duck and Cover" drills (having nothing to do with earthquakes) and tests of air-raid sirens. Sputnik was a Soviet, not American, achievement. There were also a couple of recessions that impacted our family. It is rather amazing that the optimism you cite was also such a sturdy feature of the Fifties. And that creations of the time last to be enjoyed today.
